As a home inspector, we\u2019ve seen enough chimney chaos to know that fireplaces need more than just good vibes\u2014they need prep. Read to the end to find a checklist of things to check off when preparing your fireplace to be used for the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#x1f9f9; Step 1: Clean Like Your Chimney\u2019s Life Depends on It (Because It Does)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Creosote buildup is the villain of this story. It\u2019s a sticky, highly flammable residue that loves to cling to your chimney walls like a clingy ex. Creosote is that black sticky stuff that may be covering the walls of the inside of your fireplace. It is dangerous because a small spark may ignite the fire that could lead to a devastating chimney fire. Surprisingly, creosote is the cause of 25% of chimney fires. If you haven\u2019t had a chimney sweep since the Harry Potter series first came out, it\u2019s time. A professional cleaning can prevent chimney fires and embarrassing calls to the fire department.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Bonus tip: If your chimney sweep arrives singing \u201cChim Chim Cher-ee,\u201d tip generously.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#x1f575;&#xfe0f; Step 2: Inspect Before You Ignite<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Check for cracks, loose bricks, or signs of water damage. If your fireplace looks like it\u2019s been through a bar fight with a raccoon, call a pro. And yes, we inspect fireplaces with our home inspections\u2014because nothing ruins a holiday party like smoke pouring into your living room. Our home inspections are limited to the space in the flue. If they\u2019re older than your favorite hoodie, replace them.<\/strong><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Not just for show. It\u2019s not a decorative item.<\/strong><\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#x1fab5; Step 4: Burn Smart<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Use seasoned hardwood. That means wood that\u2019s been drying for at least 6\u201312 months. Burning fresh wood is like trying to toast a wet sponge\u2014smoky, inefficient, and mildly tragic. <\/strong><strong>A University of Maryland study found that burning wet or green wood causes creosote to accumulate three times faster than dry, seasoned wood. Excess smoke condenses into creosote up the chimney.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Avoid burning wrapping paper, pizza boxes, or anything that once said \u201cDo Not Microwave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#x1f9ca; Step 5: Mind the Draft<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Cold air sneaking in through your chimney? You might feel a little breeze when you put your hand under the opening. You might need a damper adjustment or some insulation help.
